100% of your donation will be used in Kenya to support education and economic development in the rural community of Kithoka. MichiKen is a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit and your donation is tax-deductible.
Giving Opportunities are listed below and we appreciate any amount.
- BLISS Scholarships -- $125 supports a student for a year at Bishop Lawi Imathiu Secondary School for one year. Many students are the first in their families to receive a secondary (high school) education. Fundraising goal: $12,500 for 100 very needy BLISS students.
- Microloans -- We provide 0% interest loans to Kithoka-area small businesses to promote job growth. The program has been highly successful especially given that prevailing interest rates for business loans are 10% per month or more. Fundraising goal: $5,000 to support ten more businesses.
Some of you may be aware that on our August 2018 service trip there was a terrible tragedy happened where a large truck rear-ended our van near Nanyuki, Kenya causing it to roll and eject two trip members despite their wearing seat belts. One trip member, Marty Clauw, was severely injured and died in a Nairobi hospital a few days later. Another trip member, Beth Miller, suffered severe injuries. She went to a Nairobi hospital initially, but is now (August 29) being flown via air ambulance back home to a Utah. Hopefully she will be able to make a full recovery. Fundraising efforts are underway to cover medical expenses for each person and Beth's transport back to the USA.
For Beth Miller, her children set up a separate GoFundMe page to raise money to support Beth's medical expenses. On August 28 they announced they had raised sufficient funds and stopped fundraising. Please note that any donations already made on Beth's behalf through this Donate page will be transferred to Beth's fund. We are checking whether donations through MichiKen for Beth will be tax deductible. We will post that information when we have it.
For Marty Clauw, the Clauw family is in the process of setting up a memorial fund as well as a fund raising effort to cover his medical expenses. They will post information about that in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you wish to make a donation on behalf of Marty you can do that on this Donate page. Just name Marty as the recipient in the comment field when making the donation. Again, we will post about tax deductibility as soon as we find out.
Donations may be made by check or credit card.
Please consider writing checks for donations over $500, as we will then avoid the 3% credit card fees.
Checks are made out to the Michigan Kenya Partnership and mailed to: MichiKen, c/o Jim Sterken, 6177 Windmill Ct., Saline, Michigan, 48176. You can indicate the purpose of the donation if you wish in the check's memo section.
